Who We Are
Better is a team of curious and creative problem solvers based in foggy San Francisco, California. We are transparent, collaborative, and come from multidisciplinary backgrounds that allows us to use our expertise in talent and design to create meaningful programs for companies of all shapes and sizes.
Better was founded to help leaders build teams and workplaces that people love. We believe that the human approach to talent doesn’t exist anymore, and we’re here to change that. We believe in building the physical and emotional environments that foster trust between an employer and an employee. Above all, we believe in building a community of people who care about their work.
Derek has spent the last 16 years building companies through the People function in a myriad of industries including biotech, genomics, the sharing economy, consumer tech, and hospitality. During that time he has worked with more than 25 companies and personally hired in excess of 500 people globally.
He’s passionate about working with leaders who believe creating a great place starts with strong management which is a critical component in building mission-driven organizations.
Outside of work, you’ll find Derek cycling in Mt. Tam, trekking in places like Nepal, and making friends in the oceans below.
Chuck has designed experiences for the last 8 years in B2B software, education, e-commerce, life sciences, and financial services. He has a hunger to learn about people, hear their stories, and solving problems together as a team.
Chuck considers himself a lifelong learner. His mantra is to build open and honest relationships with communication. He wants to help other people build a positive team environment while having fun (and thinks it’s okay to be a little weird sometimes, too.)
Chuck tries to learn how to cook a new dish every weekend and is currently on a chili wonton kick. His favorite design activity is taking photos with a film camera.
Better is a proud member of 1% for the Planet, a global movement that supports the environment in six focus areas: climate, food, land, pollution, water, and wildlife.
